A mixture of 45 litres of spirit and water contains 20% of water in it. How much water must be added to it to make the water 25% in the new mixture ?

Solution

Amount of water = 20% of 45 litres = 9 litres.

To have 25% in the new mixture, let the addition of water be x litres.

So total water = 9 + x litres.

Total solution = 45 + x

But 9 + x = (45 + x)/4

36 + 4x = 45 + x

So, x = 3 litres.
