The difference between consecutive numbers in the series are the squares of odd numbers.
For example, 4 - 3 = 1
13 - 4 = 9
38 - 13 = 25
87 - 38 = 49
168 - 87 = 81
289 - 168 = 121
Hence the number which is wrong in the series is 166 (it should be 168)
