Question 54

How many sons does P have ?
I.S and T are brothers of M
II.The mother of T is P who has only one daughter

Solution

I : There is no information of P. Thus, it is insufficient.

II : P is the mother of T. (Gender of T is unknown).

case 1 : if T is female.

Since, P has only one daughter, that will be T in this case. Thus, P has 0 sons.

case 2 : if T is male.

We, do not know about how many children P has, so it can be 1,2,3...

=> Case 1 and 2 mismatch

Thus, II alone is not sufficient.

I & II : Combining the two statements, we get P is the mother of 3 with two sons(T & S) and a daughter(M).

Thus, I & II together are required to answer.
