Monal Kumar travelled equal distance with speed of 3 km/hr, 5 km/hr and 8 km/hr and takes a total time of 39.5 minutes. Find the total distance in km.
Solution
Let the equal distance travelled be x km
Therefore total distance travelled = 3x km
Recall that, time taken = distance/speed
Hence by the given problem, we have
$$\frac{x}{3} + \frac{x}{5} + \frac{x}{8} = \frac{39.5}{60}$$
$$\frac{40x+24x+15x}{120} = \frac{39.5}{60}$$
79x = 79
Therefore, x = 1
Thus the total distance travelled = 3x = 3×1 = 3km
