In Saroja's sari shop, the marked price of each sari is x% above the cost of its procurement. She sells each sari after a discount of 25%. In addition, if someone buys a dozen saris, she offers an extra sari for free, and still makes a profit of 8% over their cost of procurement. If Saroja had sold the saris without discounting, but with the offer of an extra saree for every dozen sold, then her profit percentage would have been:
Let the cost of procurement of each sari be Rs 100. Then,
Cost of 13 saris = 1300
Marked price of each sari $$= 100 + x$$
Since she gives a discount of 25% on the marked price, the selling price of each sari = $$(100+x)*3/4$$
Also, after selling 12 saris, she offers a sari for free.
So, she sells 13 saris at the selling price of 12 saris.
SP of 12 saris = $$12(100 + x)*3/4$$ = $$9 (100 + x) = 900 + 9x$$
It is given that she makes a profit of 8% over the cost of procurement in this case.
$$900 + 9x = 1300 * 1.08$$
$$900 +9x = 1404$$
$$x = 56$$
Marked price = $$100 + x = 156$$ = New Selling Price of each sari.
New SP of 13 saris = $$12*156 = 1872$$ (Multiplied by 12 since she offers the 13th sari for free)
Profit % = $$\ \dfrac{\ 1872-1300}{1300}=0.44\ =\ 44\%$$
