Solution
Number of applications received for subject A in 2008 $$\approx$$ 230
Number of applications received for subject B in 2008 $$\approx$$ 190
Total applications in 2008 = 230+190 = 420
Ratio of number of applications in 2008 to 2009 = 3 : 4
Let the total number of applications in 2009 be X.
$$\frac{420}{X} = \frac{3}{4}$$
$$X = \frac{420 \times 4}{3}$$
$$X = 560$$
