Find out which phrase should replace the phrase given in ‘’bold’’ to correct error, if there is any, and to make the sentence grammatically meaningful and correct. If the sentence is correct as it is and ‘’No correction is required’, mark (E) as the answer.

A nation that ‘’had been once tried to’’ kill him was the first to embrace him.

Solution

The sentence means that a nation had tried to kill him. But now it embraced him. We use had been preceded to verb+ing . But the sentence here requires had +verb because we use past perfect in the supporting clause if it impacts the main clause(also the main clause has past tense.)
