Question 168

How many students are there in a row ?
I. Manoj is the third from the right end.
II. Ashok is the fifth from the left end and thirteenth to the left of Manoj.

Solution

Clearly, I & II alone are insufficient, as there is no specific position mentioned in each of them.

I & II : Let total students in the row = $$x$$

Manoj's position from right end = 3rd

=> Manoj's position from left end = ($$x$$ + 1)-3 [position from left + position from right = total + 1]

= $$x$$ - 2

Ashok's position from left end = 5th

Also, Ashok is thirteen to the left of Manoj, => Ashok's position from left = ($$x$$ - 2) - 13 = $$x$$ - 15

=> $$x$$ - 15 = 5

=> $$x$$ = 20

Thus, I & II together are sufficient.
