Question 137

If in village E, 40% of male literates and 40% of female literates were graduates, what percent of total population were graduates ?

Solution

In village E,

Let number of males = $$x$$

and Number of females = $$y$$

=> Total literate population = $$\frac{70}{100} (x + y)$$

Literate males = $$\frac{70}{100} \times x$$

Literate females = $$\frac{70}{100} \times y$$

Literate males who are graduates = $$\frac{40}{100} \times \frac{7x}{10} = \frac{7x}{25}$$

Literate females who are graduates = $$\frac{40}{100} \times \frac{7y}{10} = \frac{7y}{25}$$

$$\therefore$$ Required % = $$\frac{(\frac{7x}{25}) + (\frac{7y}{25})}{x + y} \times 100$$

= $$\frac{7}{25} \times 100 = 28 \%$$
