Solution

Each number is divided by 2 and then 1 is subtracted.

158 $$\div 2 - 1$$ = 78

78 $$\div 2 - 1$$ = 38

38 $$\div 2 - 1$$ = 18

18 $$\div 2 - 1$$ = 8

8 $$\div 2 - 1$$ = 3
