Give answer a:if the data in statement I alone are sufficient to answer the question while the data in statement II alone are not sufficient to answer the question
Give answer b:if the data in statement II alone are sufficient to answer the question while the data in statement I alone are not sufficient to answer the question
Give answer c:if the data either in statement I alone or in statement II alone are sufficient to answer the question
Give answer d:if the data even in both the statement I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question
Give answer e:if the data in both the statement I and II together are necessary to answer the question

Question 114

X,Y and Z are integers Is X an odd number ?
(I)An odd number is obtained when X is divided when X is divided by 5.
(II)(X+Y) is an odd number

Solution

I : When X is divided by 5, the quotient obtained is odd. This can only be possible when X is odd, because if X is even, e.g.- 10,20..., the quotient obtained will be 2,4..,i.e. even.

=> X is odd.

Thus, I alone is sufficient.

II : X + Y = odd. Sum of two numbers is odd iff one is even and other is odd.

case 1 : Let X = odd & Y = even

=> X + Y = odd.

E.g- 5 + 6 = 11

case 2 : Let X = even & Y = odd

=> X + Y = odd.

E.g- 6 + 5 = 11

Hence, we cannot determine whether X is odd or not.

Thus, II alone is not sufficient.
