In order to prepare a buffer solution of pH 5.74, sodium acetate is added to acetic acid. If the concentration of acetic acid in the buffer is 1.0 M, the concentration of sodium acetate in the buffer is ________ M. (Round off to the Nearest Integer). [Given: pKa(acetic acid) = 4.74]
Correct Answer: 10
For a buffer solution, we use the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation: $$\text{pH} = \text{p}K_a + \log\frac{[\text{Salt}]}{[\text{Acid}]}$$.
Substituting the given values: $$5.74 = 4.74 + \log\frac{[\text{CH}_3\text{COONa}]}{1.0}$$.
This gives $$\log[\text{CH}_3\text{COONa}] = 5.74 - 4.74 = 1.00$$, so $$[\text{CH}_3\text{COONa}] = 10^{1.00} = 10$$ M.
Therefore the concentration of sodium acetate in the buffer is $$10$$ M.
