If the time taken by boat to travel upstream on Friday is 30 hours more than the time taken by it to travel downstream on Wednesday and the speed of boat in still water on Friday is 17 kmph, then find the upstream speed of boat on Wednesday? (speed of boat in still water is different on different days)
Upstream on Friday = 14% of 4800 = 0.14 × 4800 = 672 Km
Downstream on Wednesday = 11% of 2400 = 0.11 × 2400 = 264 Km
Friday speeds: still-water = 17 km/hr, stream on Friday = 1 km/hr (given)
upstream speed on Friday = 17−1 = 16 km/hr.
Time upstream on Friday = 672/16 = 42 hours.
Let Wednesday still-water speed be x km/hr
Stream on Wednesday = 6 km/hr (given).
Downstream speed on Wednesday = S + 6
Time downstream on Wednesday = 264/(S+6)
Time upstream on Friday = Time Downstream on Wednesday + 30
$$42=\dfrac{264\ }{S+6}+30$$
Upon solving, we get S = 16 km/hr
Upstream speed on Wednesday = S - stream = 16−6=10 km/hr.
