Question 45

There are six persons A, B, C, D, E and F in a family. C is sister of F. B is the brother of E's husband. D is the father of A and grandfather of F. There are two fathers, three brothers and a mother in the family.
In reference to the above information, which of the following are correct?
A. E is the mother in the family.
B. A is the husband of E.
C. There are four male members in the family.
D. F is the son of D.

We are given that D is the father of A and the grandfather of F. This means there are three generations. Since there are two fathers in the family, D is the first, and A must be the second father (the father of F). This means A a male.

We are also given that C is the sister of F. This means A is the father of both C and F. C is female.

There is only one mother in the family.  Since A is the father of C and F, his wife must be their mother. From the remaining people, E is the mother.

We are told there are three brothers and that B is the brother of E's husband.

Since E's husband is A, B is the brother of A. This means our first pair of brothers (A and B). For the third brother, F must be male, which makes him the brother of C.

So, the four males in the family are  D (grandfather), A (father), B (uncle), and F (son).

We get the following Family Tree:

Top Level: D is the head of the family (the grandfather).

Second Level: D has two sons, A and B. A is married to E (the mother).

Third Level: A and E have two children, C (daughter) and F (son).

Hence, only statements A, B and C are correct.

D is incorrect as F is the son of A and E.
