The following pie chart shows the share of sales of five computer brands (A-E) in India in 2005.
In 2006, value wise sale of A increased by 50% and that of E increased by 10%. The sales of all other brands remained the same. By what percentage total sales (value wise) grew in 2006 as compared to 2005?
Let the total sales in 2005 be 100x, then we can calculate the shares of each of the 5 computer brands A, B, C ,D and E as follows:
Now, in 2006, sales of A went up by 50%, so sales of A in 2006 = 1.5 times sales of A in 2005 = $$1.5\times\ 45x=67.5x$$
And, sales of E increased by 10% , So sales of E in 2006 = 1.1 times sales of E in 2005 = $$1.1\times\ 22x=24.2x$$
The sales of B, C and D remain unchanged, hence we update the table by adding another column for 2006 and filling in the values as:
Now, we have to calculate the percentage by which the sales in 2006 increased compared to the sales in 2005, which is given by $$\dfrac{Sales_{2006}-Sales_{2005}}{Sales_{2005}}\times\ 100\%=\dfrac{124.7x-100x}{100x}\times\ 100\%=24.70\%$$
So, the sales in total increased by 24.70% in 2006 as compared to 2005 .
