Circular Arrangement

Theory

Single Row Arrangement: In this arrangement, people are sitting next to each other in a single row. All of them might be facing the same direction or some of them might be facing the opposite direction.

Tip

In Single Row arrangement, it is very important to take hints from phrases such as “sitting left to him”, “sitting on his right”, “sitting to his immediate right” etc.

Tip

Depending upon the context of the problem, “right” need not necessarily mean “immediate right”. So, a statement such as “Ravi is sitting to the right of Rakesh” need not necessarily mean that Ravi and Rakesh are sitting next to each other.

Theory

Double Row Arrangement: In this arrangement, there are two rows, one behind the other. Generally, people in the two rows are sitting facing each other.

Tip

In addition to the hints for single-row arrangement, one has to look out for phrases that give the positions of persons sitting opposite to each other.

Theory

Circular Arrangement: In circular arrangement, people are sitting around a circular table, all of them facing towards the center of the table. In some rare cases, people may sit facing away from the center.

Tip

When people are sitting facing the center, right side means anti-clockwise direction and left side means clockwise direction.

Tip

When people are sitting facing away from the center, right side means clockwise direction and left side means anti-clockwise direction.

Theory

Rectangular Arrangement: In this arrangement, people are sitting around a rectangular table such that some people are sitting along the length of the rectangle and some people are sitting along the breadth of the rectangle.

Solved Example

8 people – A to H - are sitting around a circular table. A is to the immediate right of B. C is not next to either D or E. B is to the immediate right of E. E is sitting opposite to D. B and G are sitting opposite to each other.

Question 1: Who is sitting opposite to H?

Question 2: Who is sitting to the immediate left of C?

Explanation:
A is sitting to the immediate right of B. B is sitting to the immediate right of E. E is sitting opposite to D. C is not next to either E or D. B and G are occupying seats opposite to each other. So, the arrangement is as follows:

We are not sure about the exact seats of F and H. But, we can determine that F and H are sitting opposite to each other. So, the answer to the first question is F.

From the diagram, we can observe that the person sitting to the immediate left of C is G.

Solved Example

Seven friends T, U, V, W, X, Y and Z are sitting in a straight line facing north. W sits fifth to the right of T. W does not sit at any of extreme ends. Two people sit between Z and X. Y sits third to the left of U. Y sits exactly in the middle. Z is not an immediate neighbor of Y.

Who is second to the right of T?

a) Y
b) X
c) U
d) V
e) None of the above

Explanation:
W sits fifth to the right of T and he is not sitting at the end. So, T is in the first place from the left and W is in the sixth place from the end. Y is in the fourth place from the left. So, U is at the extreme right. Since Z is not a neighbor of Y, his place is second from the left. So, X is fifth from the left. The only position that is remaining is third from the left, which is occupied by V. So, V is the answer.
