  • The first train in India “Great Indian Peninsula Railway” ran between Bombay and Thane on 16 April, 1853. The distance covered by this train is around 34 kilometers.
  • Vivek Express runs between Dibrugarh (Assam) – Kanyakumari (Tamil Nadu) is the longest distance running train in India.
  • The National Academy of Indian Railways (NAIR), previously known as Railway Staff College is located in Vadodara, Gujarat.
  • The longest railway bridge in India is constructed over Vembanad Lake in Kerala.
  • Howrah Junction is the busiest railway stations in terms of passenger volume per day in India.
  • The Chenab Bridge (under construction, planned to open on 2019) across Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir is the world’s highest rail bridge.
  • Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), the headquarters of North Eastern Railway has the longest railway platform (1,366.33 m) in the world.
  • Siliguri Railway Station in West Bengal has all the three guages i.e., broad, metre and narrow.
  • In India all major passenger and freight routes are now broad gauge. The width of broad gauge is 5 feet 6 inches (1676mm).
  • The Railway manufacturing units are maintained by Ministry of Railways and they are spread across six locations in India. They are:

  • National Rail Museum located in New Delhi.
  • At present there are 17 Zonal Railways (including Metro Railway, Kolkata).
  • The Headquarters of Indian Railways is located in New Delhi.

  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus formerly known as Victoria Terminus is a historic railway station and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India which serves as the headquarters of the Central Railways.
  • Mountain Railways of India (Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (West Bengal), Nilgiri Mountain Railway (Ooty, Tamil Nadu) and Kalka-Shimla Railway (Himachal Pradesh)) are included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India.
