Question 96

A train moving at 40 km/h will take 2 hours 15 minutes more to cover a certain distance than when the speed is doubled. What is the distance ?

Solution

$$ speed = \frac{distance}{time} $$

let the distance be d

then according to the question

$$ \frac{9}{4} = \frac{d}{80} - \frac{d}{40} $$

$$ \frac{9}{4} = \frac{40 \times d}{80 \times 40} $$

$$ \frac{d}{80} = \frac{9}{4} $$

$$ d = \frac{9}{4} \times 80 = 180 km $$
