The pattern here followed is that in each term 1 is added and then odd multiples of $$\frac{1}{2}$$ are multiplied.

$$(17 + 1) \times \frac{1}{2}$$ = 9

$$(9 + 1) \times \frac{3}{2}$$ = 15

$$(15 + 1) \times \frac{5}{2}$$ = 40

$$(40 + 1) \times \frac{7}{2}$$ = 143.5

$$(143.5 + 1) \times \frac{9}{2}$$ = 650.25
