The product of two numbers is 192 and their sum is 28. Find the smallest of these two numbers.
Solution
let the numbers be x,y
product xy = 192..........(1)
sum x + y = 28............(2)
from (2) x = 28 - y
substitute in (1)
(28 - y)y = 192
$$ 28y - y^2 = 192 $$
$$ y^2 - 28y + 192 = 0 $$
solving y =12
x + 12 = 28
x = 16
