Question 31

Smita can finish a work in 12 days and Sam can finish the same work in 9 days. After working together for 4 days they both leave the job. What is the fraction of unfinished work?

Solution

Smita's 1 days work = $$\frac{1}{12}$$

Sam's 1 days work = $$\frac{1}{9}$$

Both's 1 days work = $$\frac{1}{12}+\frac{1}{9}=\frac{7}{36}$$

Both's 4 days work = $$4\times\ \frac{7}{36}=\frac{7}{9}$$

Remaining work = $$1-\frac{7}{9}=\frac{2}{9}$$

So, required fraction of work unfinished = $$\frac{2}{9}$$
