State Legislature:
Ā Ā 22 states in the country have unicameral legislature i.e, Governor and the legislative assembly while 7 states have bicameral legislature i.e, Governor, legislative assembly and the legislative council.
The legislative council (Vidhan Parishad) is the upper house or house of elders while the legislative assembly (Vidhan Sabha) Ā is the lower house or popular house.
Vidhan Sabha:
MaximumĀ strength of legislative assembly is 500 and minimumĀ strength is 60. But few states are given exception through parliamentary Acts like Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Goa minimum number fixed at 30 and for Mizoram and Nagaland it is 40 & 46 respectively.
Only two Union territories have legislative assemblies.They areĀ Delhi & Puducherry.
Highest number of Vidhan Sabha seats are in the state Uttar Pradesh – 403
Lowest number of Vidhan Sabha seats are in the state SikkimĀ –Ā 32
Union territory having lowest number of Vidhan Sabha seats is Puducherry – 30

- Uttar Pradesh
MaximumĀ strength of legislative Council is one-third of the total assemblyĀ and minimumĀ strength is 40. Ā But the actual strength of the legislative council can be determined by the parliament as done in the case of Jammu&Kashmir.
Highest number of Vidhan Parishad seats are in the state Uttar Pradesh – 100
Lowest number of Vidhan Parishad seats are in the state Jammu&Kashmir – 36
