Answers & Solutions:
1) Answer (D)
Time taken when they work together = $ \frac {1}{\frac{1}{6}+\frac{1}{12}}$
= 4 days
2) Answer (D)
Work done in an hour when both pipe were opened = $\frac{1}{6} – \frac{1}{8} = \frac{1}{24}$
Let’s say after x hours outlet pipe was closed, so total tank filled in that time = $\frac{x}{24}$
After that for remaining (9-x) hours, tank filled = $\frac{(9-x)}{6}$
Hence, $\frac{x}{24}$ + $\frac{(9-x)}{6}$ = 1
Now after solving for x, x=4 hours
So answer will be d
3) Answer (C)
-Number of stations in 350 kilometers = 350/ 42 = 50/6 = 8 stations.
Time stopped at stations = 8 x 5 = 2/3 hrs
Time taken for travel = 350/72 + 2/3 = 5 hours 31 minutes 40 seconds
4) Answer (B)
Relative distance to be covered = length of the train = 600 m
Relative speed = Speed of the train + Speed of the person (opposite direction)
= 54 * 5/18 m/s + 5 m/s = 15 + 5 = 20 m/s
So, time taken = 600/20 = 30 seconds
5) Answer (B)
Work done by 2 women = Work done by 1 man
Work done by 20 women = Work done by 10 men
So, 10 men + 10 men = 20 men take 20 days to finish the work
So, to complete it in 1 day, the number of men required = 20*20 = 400
6) Answer (D)
Let the number of days taken by Krishna to complete the work be N.
Ram’s one-day work + Krishna’s one-day work = 1/60 + 1/N
Total one day work = 1/40
=> 1/60 + 1/N = 1/40 => 1/N = 1/40 – 1/60 = 1/120
=> N = 120 days
7) Answer (C)
Let the usual speed be s.
So, time of journey = 1200/s
Reduced speed = s-10
Time of journey = 1200/(s-10)
So, 1200/(s-10) – 1200/s = 4
Solving, we get, s = 60 kmph
So, time of journey = 1200/60 = 20 hours
Time of journey in this case = 24 hours
8) Answer (A)
Chetan’s one-day work = 1/10
Dhanush’s one-day work = 1/15
One-day work of Chetan + Dhanush = 1/10 + 1/15 = 10/60 = 1/6
So, number of days required to complete the work = 1/(1/6) = 6 days
So, after 5 days, the fraction of work remaining = (6-5)/6 = 1/6
9) Answer (D)
Let the speed of the second train be ‘s’.
Case 1: Relative speed = 100 – s
Relative distance = 50 m + 100 m = 150 m
Time taken = 7.5 seconds
Relative speed = Relative distance / time = 150 / 7.5 = 20 m/s = 72 kmph
So, speed of the second train = 28 kmph = 7.77 m/s
Time taken by the second train to cross a pole = Relative distance / Speed
= 100/7.77 = 12.85 seconds = 13 seconds approximately
10) Answer (A)
1st tap’s 1 hour work = ¼
2nd tap’s 1 hour work = -1/6
One hour work of both the taps together = ¼ – 1/6 = 1/12
So, time taken to fill an empty tank = 1/(1/12) = 12 hours
11) Answer (B)
Total work = 18 * 150
108 persons can complete it in $\frac{18*150}{108}$
= $\frac{150}{6}$ = 25 days
12) Answer (D)
Let the total work be x.
P completes $\frac{x}{40}$ work every day.
Q completes $\frac{x}{120}$ work every day.
P + Q => $\frac{x}{40}$ + $\frac{x}{120}$ = $\frac{1}{30}$
=> P and Q together will take 30 days to complete the work.
13) Answer (B)
In 1 hour the car can travel 80 km if stoppages are excluded.
In the same time, the care can travel only 50 km if stoppages are included.
=> 30 km less because of stoppages
Time taken to cover 30km = $\frac{30}{80}$ = 0.375 hours = 0.375 * 60 minutes = 22.5 minutes
14) Answer (D)
$\frac{1}{a} + \frac{1}{b}$ = $\frac{1}{18}$
$\frac{1}{a} + \frac{1}{c}$ = $\frac{1}{24}$
$\frac{1}{b} + \frac{1}{c}$ = $\frac{1}{36}$
=> 2($\frac{1}{a} + \frac{1}{b} + \frac{1}{c}$) = $\frac{1}{18}$ + $\frac{1}{24}$ + $\frac{1}{36}$ = $\frac{1}{8}$
=> ($\frac{1}{a} + \frac{1}{b} + \frac{1}{c}$) = $\frac{1}{16}$
=> It takes 16 days for A, B and C together to complete the work.
15) Answer (A)
A’s 1 day work = 1/10
B’s 1 day work = 1/15
(A+B)’s 1 day work = 1/10 + 1/15 = 5/30 = 1/6
Hence they will take 6 days to complete the same work.
