  • Om Birla will be the 17th Speaker of the Lok Sabha. The only two female Lok Sabha Speakers are Meira Kumar and Sumitra Mahajan.
    • According to the Indian Constitution to Article 79, the Union shall have a Parliament consisting of the President and two Houses – the Rajya Sabha (the Council of States) and the Lok Sabha (the House of People) (House of the people).
    • Lok Sabha’s Speaker Criteria for Eligibility
  • The following are the requirements for becoming Speaker of the Lok Sabha:
    1. He/she must be an Indian citizen.
    2. He/she must be at least 25 years old.
    3. He or she must not hold any paid position with the Indian government or a state government.
  • According to Articles 94 and 96, the Lok Sabha speaker can be removed by a resolution passed by an effective majority (>50% of total strength excluding vacancies) of the house.
