Answers & Solutions:

1) Answer (C)

Length of the platform = 20/14 * 476 = 20*34 = 680 m
So, speed of man = 680/425 s = 1.6 m/s

2) Answer (C)

Speed = Distance/Time =600/9 m/sec
=600/9×18/5 km/hr = 240 km/hr
∵ 1 m/sec = 18/5 km/hr

3) Answer (A)

Speed = distance/Time=100/10 = 10 m/sec = 10 × 18/5 = 36 km/hr”>

4) Answer (D)

Speed = Distance/Time = (200+240)/22 = 440/22 = 20 m/sec = 20 x 18/5 = 72 km/hr

5) Answer (A)

Speed = Distance/Time = 150/5=30 m/sec

∴ Required Time = (150+180)/30=330/30 = 11 sec

6) Answer (A)

Relative speed of the trains = (77 + 67) km/hr = 144 km/hr = 144 × 5/18 m/sec = 40 m/sec
Time taken by the trains to cross each other = Time taken to cover (260 + 140) m at 40 m/sec = (400/40) sec = 10 sec

7) Answer (D)

Time taken to cover 375 km = (375/75)h = 5h
Number of stoppages = 375/125-1 = 2
Total time to stoppages = (5 × 2 ) min = 10 min
Hence, total time taken = 5 h 10 min

8) Answer (A)

Relative speed of the trains = (80 − 50) km/hr = 30 km/hr = 30× 5/18 m/sec = (25/3) m/sec
∴ Length of the train = 25/3 × 27 = 225 m

9) Answer (A)

Speed of the first train = (200/15) m/sec = (40/3) m/sec
Let the speed of the second train be x m/sec
Relative speed = (40/3 +x) m/sec ∴ 400/(40/3 + x) = 12 ⟺ 400 = 12 (40/3+ x) ⟺ 400 = 160 + 12 x x = ((400-160))/12 = 240/12 = 20 m/sec
So, speed of second train = (20 × 18/5) km/hr = 72 km/hr

10) Answer (A)

Due to stoppages, it covers (40 – 29) = 11 km less
Time taken to cover 11 km = $\frac{11}{40}*60 = 16.5$ min

11) Answer (C)

Let the correct time to complete the journey be x min.
Distance covered in (x + 11) min. at 40 kmph = Distance covered in (x + 5) min. at 50 kmph
∴((x+11))/60 * 40=((x+5))/60 * 50
(40x+440)/60=(50x+250)/60
Or, 50x-40x=440-250
Or, 10x=190
Or, x=190/10=19min

12) Answer (B)

Distance = Speed × Time = 78 × 5/18 × 60 = 1300 m
∴ Length of the tunnel = 1300 – 800 = 500 m

13) Answer (B)

Speed of the train relative to man = (60 – 12) km/hr = 48 × 5/18 m/sec = 40/3 m/sec
Time taken by the train to cross the man = Time taken by it to cover 200 m at (40/3) m/sec = 200 × 3/40 sec = 15 sec

14) Answer (B)

Average speed = (Total distance travelled/(Total time taken) =160/(120/80+40/40)=16/2.5=160×2/5 =64 km/h

15) Answer (D)

Time taken to cover 375 km = (375/75)h = 5h
Number of stoppages =375/125-1 = 2
Total time to stoppages = (5 × 2) min = 10 min
Hence, total time taken = 5 h 10 min

16) Answer (E)

Since the trains are moving at the same speed, to calculate time taken, relative speed ie difference of speeds (0) will be in the denominator.

17) Answer (D)

(x+5)*40 = 400 (Where x is speed of the train)
x=5

18) Answer (A)

(400+600)/(6-4) = 500 sec. (Total distance/relative velocity)

19) Answer (D)

relative speed of train B w.r.t. A = 45 km/h
distance between them = 90 km.
Time taken to cross each other = 2 h

20) Answer (B)

(x+10)*(4/3600) = 400/1000 (Where x is speed of the train in kmph)
x=26

21) Answer (C)

total distance travelled = 800
speed will be = 800/5 = 160 m/s.

22) Answer (B)

Total distance = 600 meter
Relative speed = 40 km/h or 40*(5/18) m/s
Time taken to cross each other = 600*18/5*40 = 54 seconds

23) Answer (C)

Total distance to be covered = 500 m
Time taken = 500/10 = 50s

24) Answer (D)

The relative speed of the train with respect to the man is 300/15 = 20 m/s
As the man is running in the same direction, the absolute speed of the train equals 20+5 = 25 m/s
Converting this into km/hr, the speed is 25*3.6 = 90 km/hr

25) Answer (C)

Let’s say speed of train is x m/s
So time taken to cross = length of train/relative speed of train and bike = 200/(36+x) = 2
Hence, x = 64 m/s
