Answers & Solutions:

1) Answer (C)

Speed of the train A = 72 * 5 /18 = 20 m/s

Speed of train B = 108 * 5/18 = 30 m/s

Total time to cross each other = total distance / total speed

= 300/50 = 6 seconds

2) Answer (C)

Let the distance be d.

D/10 = T+ 1/10

D/12 = T – 1/10

So, D = 12 kilometers.

3) Answer (A)

Distance from A = 100 * 50 / (50 + 75) = 40 kms

4) Answer (A)

Time taken to cross the pole will be = $\frac{400}{400/18}$ = 18 seconds (As 80 km/h = 80*(5/18) Meter/seconds)
Hence, answer will be 18 seconds

5) Answer (A)

B will finish the race in 150/50 = 3 hours
In 2 hours, distance travelled by A = 30*2 = 60 km
As they both finished together, in 1 hour distance travelled by A = 90 km
Hence, increased speed of car B = 90 km/h

6) Answer (C)

The total distance of his friend’s house from his house is 10 kilometers north-east. This can be obtained by using Pythagoras theorem where the distance is the sum of the squared distance of 3 and 4 which is 5 kilometers.

7) Answer (D)

Let the distance be x

Relative speed when travelling upstream = 5 – 1 = 4 kmph

Relative speed when travelling downstream = 5 + 1 = 6 kmph

Time taken = 75 minutes = 1.25 hours

So, x/4 + x/6 = 1.25

So, x = 3 kms

8) Answer (B)

Relative distance to be covered = length of the train = 600 m
Relative speed = Speed of the train + Speed of the person (opposite direction)
= 54 * 5/18 m/s + 5 m/s = 15 + 5 = 20 m/s
So, time taken = 600/20 = 30 seconds

9) Answer (A)

Let the speed of the man be ‘s’ and the distance be ‘d’.
So, d/(s+5) = d/s – 2
d/(s-2) = d/s + 1.5

By checking the options, we see that if s = 10 kmph, then d = 60 km.

10) Answer (D)

Let the time taken to meet = t hrs
Distance covered by runner starting from A = 30 * t
Distance covered by runner starting from B = 40 * t
30t + 40t = 0.2 km
=> t = 0.2/70
So, distance covered by the runner starting from A = 30 * 0.2/70 = 6/70 km = 600/7 m\
