Selection procedure:

IBPS Clerk exam consists of 2 processes.

1. Preliminary exam
2. Mains exam

Preliminary exam:

The preliminary exam consists of 3 sections – English language, Reasoning ability and Quantitative Ability. The English language section contains 30 questions of 1 mark each. The other two sections contain 35 questions of 1 mark each. The time duration of the exam is 1 hour. One-fourth of a mark is deducted for every wrong answer. There are no sectional timings, and hence, aspirants can attempt the sections in the order of their strength.

In Prelims exam, aspirants must clear both the sectional and overall cutoffs.
Last year, IBPS clerk cutoff saw a massive jump in some states. This may be due to the dearth of vacancies or reduction in the quality of the paper. Hence, Aspirants must shoot for a score north of at least 65 in the prelims to be on the safer side.

Mains exam:

The mains exam consists of 5 sections.
The reasoning ability section contains 40 questions carrying a total 50 marks. Same is the case with quantitative aptitude section.
General awareness section contains 40 questions, each question carrying a mark. English language section also contains 40 questions, carrying a total of 40 marks. Computer knowledge section contains 40 questions amounting to a total of 20 marks.

There will be sectional time limits in the mains exam. Also, aspirants must attempt the sections in the order the sections appear. Switching between the sections is not an option.

The sectional time limits are 30 minutes each for reasoning, English language and Quantitative aptitude. 25 minutes are available for general awareness section and 20 minutes are available for the computer knowledge section. As a whole, the duration of the mains exam is 135 minutes. IBPS deducts one-fourth of the mark a question carries in case of wrong answers.

IBPS prepares merit list on the basis of the marks aspirants secure in the mains exam only. Then, IBPS allots positions in banks to candidates who rank sufficiently high in the merit list, provisionally.

As IBPS has done away with the interviews, subjectivity is reduced by a great margin. Hence, the priority must be to score as high as possible in the mains exam. After completing 2-3 years in the bank, clerks can become TOs (Trainee officers) – similar to POs by clearing internal examinations. Hence, IBPS PO aspirants must also attempt this exam.
