The exam had 3 sections – English language, Reasoning ability and Numerical ability. English language section had 30 questions while the other 2 sections had 35 questions each. All the questions carried 1 mark each. There were no sectional time limits. IBPS deducted 0.25 marks for every wrong answer.
IBPS normalised the scores of the students across various slots to arrive at scaled scores. Aspirants clearing both the sectional and overall cut off were shortlisted for the mains exam.

English language section:
The English language section had only 3 type of questions. For reading comprehension, a passage was given, and 10 questions followed it. Also, a few synonym and antonym questions based on the contextual meaning were asked in the exam.
Cloze test carried 10 marks. The remaining 10 questions were from spotting the errors. No questions on double fillers, para-jumbles were asked in the exam. However, these questions are very important and can reappear in this year’s exam.
Most aspirants felt the section to be easy. Though questions of a few type were not asked, aspirants must not leave them during their preparation.
Reasoning Ability:
One of the major changes in this section was that questions on syllogism were not asked.
There were 5 questions on inequalities. All the questions were deemed easy by the aspirants.
One puzzle based on circular seating arrangement and 2 puzzles based on linear seating arrangement was asked. 5 questions were based on alphanumeric series and 10 questions were based on miscellaneous topics.

Numerical Ability:
This section did not have any major changes. There were 5 questions on Number series. 15 questions were from simplification and approximation. One can solve these questions in a jiffy if one had practised enough. Hence, aspirants must prepare well to attempt sitters like these questions.
There was only 1 DI set. The set had 5 questions.
The other 10 questions were from various topics such as ratios, TSD, partnerships etc. These questions can be a bit time consuming as compared to other types of questions. Hence, attempt these questions after solving the easier ones.
This section was also considered easy by the aspirants. The overall cut-off was as high as 73 in some states. The sectional cut offs were 7.75 for the English language section, 10.25 for the reasoning section and 10.75 for the quants section.
IBPS Clerk prelims 2017:
As the number of vacancies has drastically gone down, the cut-offs are expected to increase exponentially. We can also expect a steep increase in the level of questions. Hence, aspirants must start solving tougher problems from now on.
Solving tougher problems will help you to be at ease if the level of problems increases this year.
Also, IBPS has been doing away with easy topics on a regular basis. Hence, do not become overly reliant on particular topics. Try to have at least some basic idea about all the topics being tested in the examination.
