The West Central Railway one of the 19 zones of the Indian Railways, came into existence on 1 April 2003. It is headquartered in Jabalpur. It was created by taking away two divisions namely the Bhopal division and Jabalpur division from central railways and one division namely the Kota division from the western railway.

On 1 April 2003, the West Central Railway was reconstituted from parts of the Central Railway and Western Railway by allocating the Jabalpur and Bhopal divisions of the Central Railway zone (CR) and the reorganized Kota of the Western Railway zone (WR) to WCR.
