The Union Public Service Commission, commonly abbreviated as UPSC, is India’s premier central recruiting agency for central government public servants. It is responsible for appointments to and examinations for Group A and Group B posts under the civil services cadre and defence services cadre of the union government. The Royal Commission on the Superior Civil Services in India was set up under the chairmanship of Lord Lee of Fareham by the British Government in 1923.
