It is the largest oil and gas exploration and production company in the country and produces and around 70% of India’s crude oil (equivalent to around 57% of the total country’s total demand) and around 84% of its natural gas. In November 2010, the Government of India conferred the Maharatna status to ONGC.
Before the Independence of India in 1947, the Assam oil company in the north-eastern and the Attock oil company in the northwestern part of undivided India were the only oil-producing companies, with minimal exploration input. The major part of Indian sedimentary basins was deemed to be unfit for the development of oil and gas resources.
