Subsequently, its activities have been diversified to include procurement of food grains under Minimum Support Price (MSP), Aadhaar based distribution of essential commodities viz. Rice, Wheat, Sugar, Kerosene and Red gram dal through Fair Price Shops under the Public Distribution System at subsidized rates through an issue of cards, consumer affairs, monitoring of prices of essential commodities, distribution of LPG connections to BPL women (Deepam Scheme)etc.,
The food and Civil Supplies department came into existence in March 1965. Before 1965, Food and Civil Supply came under Agriculture, Food and Cooperation Department.
The Ministry of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection is a ministry of the Government of Maharashtra. The ministry is responsible for consumer protection and regulating food and civil supply issues in Maharashtra.
The Ministry is headed by a cabinet-level minister. Chhagan Bhujbal is the current Minister of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection.
