From the given equation, we can see that $p+q = \\dfrac{a+4}{1} = a+4$<\/p>\n

Also we can see, $pq = \\dfrac{2(5a-23)}{1} = 10a-46$<\/p>\n

Now, $p^2+q^2 = p^2+q^2+2pq-2pq = (p+q)^2-2pq $<\/p>\n
