State Legislature:<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>22 states in the country have unicameral legislature i.e, Governor and the legislative assembly while 7 states have bicameral legislature i.e, Governor, legislative assembly and the legislative council.<\/p>\n

The legislative council (Vidhan Parishad) is the upper house or house of elders while the legislative assembly (Vidhan Sabha) \u00a0is the lower house or popular house.<\/p>\n

Vidhan Sabha:<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Maximum<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0strength of legislative assembly is 500 <\/b><\/strong>and minimum<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0strength is 60<\/b><\/strong>. But few states are given exception through parliamentary Acts like Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Goa minimum number fixed at 30 and for Mizoram and Nagaland it is 40 & 46 respectively.<\/p>\n

Only two Union territories have legislative assemblies.They are\u00a0Delhi & Puducherry<\/b><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Highest number of Vidhan Sabha seats are in the state Uttar Pradesh – 403<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

Lowest number of Vidhan Sabha seats are in the state Sikkim<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0–\u00a032<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

Union territory having lowest number of Vidhan Sabha seats is Puducherry – 30<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

Vidhan Parishad:<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Seven states having Vidhan Parishad are<\/p>\n

  3. Jammu & Kashmir<\/li>\n
  4. Karnataka<\/li>\n

    Maximum<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0strength of legislative Council is one-third<\/strong> of the total assembly\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>and minimum<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0strength is 40. \u00a0<\/b><\/strong>But the actual strength of the legislative council can be determined by the parliament as done in the case of Jammu&Kashmir.<\/p>\n

    Highest number of Vidhan Parishad seats are in the state Uttar Pradesh – 100<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

    Lowest number of Vidhan Parishad seats are in the state Jammu&Kashmir – 36<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n
